Aluminum Extrusion Process

Aluminum is a preferred material in many sectors thanks to its lightness, durability and processability. It has a wide range of uses, especially in areas such as construction, automotive, electronics and packaging. One of the most widely used methods for producing this material in various profiles and shapes is extrusion. So, what is the aluminum extrusion process and how is it performed? Preparation of Aluminum Billets
The extrusion process starts with the preparation of aluminum billets. Billets are obtained by casting pure aluminum with the addition of certain alloys. These billets are heated to a temperature suitable for extrusion (usually 400-500°C). This temperature facilitates the forming of the aluminum and maintains the quality of the material.
Extrusion Mold Preparation
While the billets are heating, the extrusion die is prepared, which determines the shape of the desired profile. This die is usually made of steel and can create complex geometries of profiles with special designs. The mold is placed inside the press and is one of the most critical elements that determine the quality of the production process.
Extrusion Process
The heated aluminum billet is placed inside a large press. Under high pressure, the billet is passed through the mold and the aluminum comes out, taking the shape of the mold. This process can be thought of as shaping play dough. Only here, much higher temperatures and pressures are used. After leaving the mold, the aluminum is in a long profile.
Cooling and Strain Relief
After the extrusion process, the resulting profile is cooled quickly. This is usually done with water or air. After the cooling process is completed, the profile is heat treated in special furnaces to remove internal stresses that may occur in the profile. This process increases the mechanical properties of aluminum and prevents deformation in the product.
Cutting and Finishing
The cooled profile is cut into desired lengths. The cutting process can be customized according to customer requirements. After cutting, various finishing processes are applied to improve the surface quality of the profile and extend its service life. These include cleaning, polishing and painting the surface of the profile. Electrostatic powder coating is a widely used surface coating method for aluminum profiles.
Quality Control and Packaging
The last step of the extrusion process is the quality control of the produced profiles. At this stage, the dimensions, surface quality and mechanical properties of the profiles are examined in detail. Products that comply with quality standards are carefully packaged and made ready for shipment. Quality control is of great importance to ensure customer satisfaction and maintain the quality of the production process.
